How to Play Pick 3 Plus

New Mexico's Pick 3 Plus is an easy game to play, as you just have to choose your numbers, a play type and a draw time. There’s full step-by-step instructions below, followed by more information about how each play type works.

There are two daily drawings. You have until 1:00 p.m. to buy tickets for the Day draw, or 9:30 p.m. for the Evening draw. The numbers are selected shortly after the cut-off time.

Choose your numbers
Choose your numbers

Pick three numbers from 0 to 9 by marking one digit from each column on your playslip. Alternatively, select the QP box or ask the retailer for a Quick Pick to get a random combination.

Decide whether to play a Straight, Box, Straight/Box or Combo. There are also a couple more options – Front Pair and Back Pair. You can play a Pair on its own or added to another play type.

There are five play boards, lettered A-E, on a playslip, so you can submit multiple sets of numbers. Remember to indicate which play type you want for each board.

Specify whether you will be entering the Day draw, Evening draw, or both. Use the Multi-Draw section to play your numbers in as many as 14 consecutive drawings.

You will automatically be entered into the next available drawing for your selected draw time, unless you mark another day on the ‘Advance Play’ area of your playslip. There’s a fixed price of $1 per play, so the total cost just depends on how many sets of numbers you enter and how many drawings. If you play Front Pair or Back Pair on top of another play type, it is an extra $1.

Play Types

Find out more about the different ways you can play before you decide which one to select. The play type you choose dictates how much you can win, and your odds of success.

Straight

This is a wager on the three number you pick being drawn in that exact order. If you choose 123, for example, you only win if the numbers are drawn as 123. If just two are selected in the correct positions, or if the numbers are drawn in another order, you lose.

Box

With a Box wager, you win if all three of your numbers are drawn and the order does not matter, so your chances of winning are far better. You can play a 3-Way Box or a 6-Way Box.

Straight/Box

A $1 Straight/Box play combines a $0.50 Straight wager and a $0.50 Box wager. If you match your three numbers exactly, you win both parts of the prize. If your numbers are drawn in a different order, you still win the Box part of the prize.

Combo

A Combo gives you the chance to win the same prize as if you are playing a Straight, but with the same good odds that you get with a Box. This is because each possible combination of your three digits is entered as a separate Straight play. You have to pay for each entry, so the cost of a Combo is $3 or $6 instead of $1.

Add-On Plays

You can also play a Front Pair or a Back Pair play in Pick 3 Plus. Add either type on to another play or just select Front Pair or Back Pair. If played on their own, these plays may show an asterisk instead of a number on your ticket, for example 12* or *23.

Front Pair

Select the two numbers you think will be drawn in the first and second positions. You have to match them both in the correct places to win the associated prize.

Back Pair

This is a prediction on the second and third numbers to be drawn. Again, both have to be correct to win, so if you choose *23 and the numbers drawn are 232, the wager is lost.

How to Win Prizes

To win a prize, you must match the numbers according to the requirements of your play type. Depending on which play type you have selected, you could win hundreds of dollars. Go to the Prizes page to see all the payouts that are available, along with the odds of winning.
